Yosemite is one of the first national parks in the US and one of the most beautiful places on Earth. You won’t see the whole park (it’s almost 1,200 square miles), but you will definitely catch many of the best sights. So, use those Betlabel winnings to plan your trip!
1. Swinging Bridge Viewpoint
Kick off your Yosemite adventure with a quick stop at the Swinging Bridge picnic area. If you’re there in June, you might catch a beautiful reflection in the water from past flooding. Thanks to this natural wonder, the Merced River could look like a lake!
2. Mist Trail
Then, drive to the Mist Trail parking lot early to avoid crowds and secure a spot. You can park at Curry Village or the Yosemite Valley Trailhead Parking. The Trailhead is closer and it will save you 10 minutes, but Curry Village has a cafe if you’d like a snack before or after the hike.
The hike is moderate, with elevation gain even if you stop before Nevada Fall. If it ends up being too much, try the easier Mirror Lake trail.
At the top of Vernal Fall, you can continue for a short detour to see Nevada Fall and Liberty Cap. Or, hike to Clark Point for a higher view of Vernal Fall and then return via the John Muir Trail. Either option offers a variety of scenery in 2 to 3 hours of hiking.
Be sure to bring water, snacks, sturdy shoes, and a poncho to stay dry near the waterfall—this is how the Mist Trail got its name!
3. Cathedral Rocks Viewpoint
This viewpoint doesn’t have a name or sign, but it is totally worth stopping for photos. As you drive west on the valley loop road, pass the El Capitan picnic area. Before you reach the Devil’s Elbow curve, you’ll find a pull-off with great views of the Cathedral Rocks.
4. El Capitan Meadow
The El Capitan meadow is right next to the road and is one the most underrated spots in the park. It has amazing views of Cathedral Rocks and a clear look at El Capitan. This is a huge granite monolith that Alex Honnold climbed without gear in the movie Free Solo.
Many people bring lawn chairs to watch climbers scale El Capitan. It’s a perfect spot to visit in the afternoon.
